Studies have found significant variations in the way that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is treated in primary care settings; in a Consensus Development Conference in 1998, the National Institute of Health identified a number of areas in the treatment of ADHD for which crucial evidence is lacking. Based on a survey of 47 experts on the psychosocial treatment of ADHD and 44 experts on the psychopharmacology of ADHD, these guidelines cover assessment and diagnostic issues, selection of initial treatment strategies (medication and/or psychosocial interventions), sequencing of treatments, developmental considerations, and management of comorbid conditions. The guidelines also include recommendations for managing partial response to treatment and for maintenance treatment.
