Treatment of Depression in Women 2001

Altshuler LL, Cohen LS, Moline ML, Kahn DA, Carpenter D, Docherty JP. The Expert Consensus Guidelines™: Treatment of Depression in Women. A Postgraduate Medicine Special Report. March 2001. The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.

Women constitute two-thirds of patients suffering from common depressive disorders, making the treatment of depression in women a substantial public health concern. Unfortunately, high-quality, empirical data on depressive disorders specific to women are limited and there are no comprehensive, evidence-based practice guidelines on the best approaches for treating depression in women. The Expert Consensus Guidelines™ for the Treatment of Depression in Women aim to fill that gap by drawing on findings in the available research literature as well as the results of a survey of 36 experts in the field of women's mental health. The guidelines cover four main areas: premenstrual dysphoric disorder, depression that occurs while trying to conceive or during pregnancy, postpartum depression, and depression related to menopause. For each type of depressive presentation, recommendations are given concerning assessment, selection of overall treatment approach (i.e., whether to use medications or psychosocial interventions or both), selection of specific medications and types of psychosocial treatments. Special guidance is provided concerning the safety of different medications for use during conception, pregnancy, and lactation. Also included are four "Guides for Patients and Families" on 1) Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, 2) Major Depression During Conception and Pregnancy, 3) Postpartum Depression, and 4) Depression During the Transition to Menopause. These guides were developed with the assistance of a variety of patient-family advocacy and support groups.
